The Role of Radon in the McClean Lake North Uranium Discovery

A drill hole in the centre of a strong radon anomaly intersected 33 feet of 7.51% U3O8 at 500 feet depth
  • The radon survey was carried out with alphameters placed under the snow.
  • Although the ore-grade mineralization was at 500 feet, anomalous uranium was observed at much shallower depths. This near surface mineralization may have given rise to the radon anomaly observed at surface.
  • This information and the attached figure were taken from Saracoglu,N; Wallis,R.H.; Brummer,J.J.; and Golightly,J.P. 1983: Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Bulletin, vol. 76, No. 852.
  • Alphameters have the advantage that they remain at the sample site and collect data over a period of days, averaging out any temporal variations.
  • Our instruments have the advantage of instant results at the sample site, with the possibility of immediate follow-up and checking.
  • Our instruments also determine thoron, and the Rn/Tn ratio is important in recognising false anomalies due to soil permeability. link.
INSTRUMENTS
  • We measure: radon - radium - thoron - radon daughters - alpha radiation.
  • The Lucas cell is recognized as the most sensitive and reliable method for these elements.
  • Our instruments are used around the world in exploration for uranium, oil & gas, groundwater and hydrothermal, and in health physics, earthquake prediction, and evaluation of hydrocarbon and NAPL contamination.
  • Modern, low-power, field-rugged electronics.
  • Sensitive to geochemical trace levels necessary for radon in lake water and for radon-thoron isotope ratios.
  • Can work in a tent without electricity or be carried from point to point in the field.
  • 40 readings per day. Results available immediately.
  • Can be operated by junior personnel if carefully supervised.
  • Same instruments used for radon and radium in soil, sediment, plant parts, rocks, water, soil gas, air, and snow, and for radon daughters in air.
